The Butterfly House is one of the buildings of the Hofburg Palace, the home of the Habsburgs of Austria until 1918. In the Burggarten (the Emperor’s Garden), they built the Palm House, a greenhouse designed in 1901 in Art Nouveau style by the architect Friedrich Ohmann. The Butterfly House was originally established in 1990 at the Wustenhaus Schönnbrunn, before moving into the magnificent Palm House in 1998. The estate’s Manor House and outbuildings were designed by Tom P. Barnett, one of the most skilled architects to work in St. Louis. The following year, 2002, the second expansion of the facility opened and was designated the "Emerson Lakeside Terrace". This plaza area is the site for many special events, both public and private.
