Many of these are brought from the tropics in South Asia, Australia, and South America. Under its dome, the Conservatory holds rainforest conditions, plants that feed the butterflies, and an 180-meter pathway along which you can walk. At the Emergence Window, you can see butterflies leaving their pupae and start to take flight. Among the species on show are the Banded Orange, Gulf Fritillary, Sara Longwing, and the Common Mormon. The 8,000 square foot Conservatory housing nearly 2,000 butterflies year round is the heart of the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House. This climate controlled space is where the "miracle of metamorphosis" takes places every day.

It's open every day but Monday, and closed on major holidays, including Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. We highly encourage all shoots to be done outdoors as it is extremely difficult to do portrait photography in our Conservatory without blocking pathways or access for our other visitors. The Butterfly House and its pathways are fully accessible to guests who use the assistance of a wheelchair, walker, or scooter. There are benches throughout the facility where guests to sit to admire the beauty all around them.

The Butterfly House is one of the buildings of the Hofburg Palace, the home of the Habsburgs of Austria until 1918. In the Burggarten (the Emperor’s Garden), they built the Palm House, a greenhouse designed in 1901 in Art Nouveau style by the architect Friedrich Ohmann. The Butterfly House was originally established in 1990 at the Wustenhaus Schönnbrunn, before moving into the magnificent Palm House in 1998. The huge glass domes of the Palm House were well-suited to house exotic plants and waterfalls, with plenty of room for the butterflies to fly freely.

Proceeds from the shop support the continued operation of the Butterfly House. Hand-painted floors were the jumping-off point for designer Amy Peltier’s soothing primary bedroom design. “It was so much work, but it turned out beautiful.” The firm wanted the space to feel “light and airy and breezy,” and incorporated fabrics and wall coverings by Thibaut in a soft color palette.

Landscape architect Matt Moynihan designed the Butterfly Garden under the direction of Butterfly House staff horticulturalists. A visit to the Butterfly House is not only exciting and educational, but promotes environmental stewardship through example. An additional 8,000 square feet of interior space is devoted to living exhibits, classrooms and visitor amenities.

In 2003, the Butterfly House was accredited by the AZA, becoming the only dedicated insect facility in this organization. The Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House is a butterfly zoo operated by the Missouri Botanical Gardens, and located in Faust Park in Chesterfield, Missouri, United States. Faust is a St. Louis County Park in Chesterfield, Missouri off Olive Blvd.  The park has several attractions in addition to the Butterfly House. If, at any time, Butterfly House Management determines the party is not abiding by the guidelines, the photography will be terminated immediately. The estate’s Manor House and outbuildings were designed by Tom P. Barnett, one of the most skilled architects to work in St. Louis. Barnett, Haynes, and Barnett designed many prominent structures in St. Louis including the new St. Louis Cathedral and #1 Portland Place. The following year, 2002, the second expansion of the facility opened and was designated the "Emerson Lakeside Terrace". This plaza area is the site for many special events, both public and private.
